Place of Waters Bright: The Rockaways
March 2023
I traveled to The Rockaways - a section of neighborhoods on a peninsula set across the water from Manhattan. I was initially drawn to The Rockaways because of the robust surfing population regardless of the season. After researching the region further, I discovered a group called The New York Dippers Club and knew I needed to make the two-hour trip east. During my time there, I spent the morning documenting members of the New York Dippers Club, a group that meets daily to plunge into the ocean for cold water therapy. I then photographed several surfers as they prepared to get in the ocean, and then as they were catching waves. Following that, I met up with some of the members of The New York Dippers Club and talked with them over a cup of coffee and “Breakfast Sammy” at Locals Collective NYC. While chatting with the dippers, one of the members offered to show my mom and me around different spots in the Rockaways. I was gladly surprised by this kind gesture, and took them up on it. We explored different parts of Rockaway - some of which can be seen in the gallery below.
